RAJASTHAN

RAJASTHAN - The Abode of Kings - is perhaps the best known state in India. Its main towns are Jaipur, the state capital; Udaipur with its famous lake and city palaces; Jodhpur; Jaisalmer and Bikaner in the Great Thar desert. Rajasthan is made up of dozens of princely states which were combined in 1947 and the state’s borders were finalised in 1956. It is south west of Delhi, bordering with Pakistan to the west. As its name suggests, Rajasthan is a state of enchanting palaces, both grandiose and intimate and hill forts that take your breath away.

There is a wide variety of landscape within the state - desert and sand dunes in the west around Jaisalmer and Bikaner; lakes; rivers; forest; hills and dramatic cliffs; even the beautiful rose fields around Pushkar and the great salt lake at Sambhar.

We work with professional, reliable and above all local location managers and line producers. With them, we manage to gain access to places that are normally off limits. Private palaces, remote hill forts, deserted villages and brightly coloured villages that are full of life. Our top places to shoot are Jaipur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur.

Udaipur is built around two lakes - Pichola and Fateh Sagar. Lake Pichola is home to the world famous Lake Palace Hotel. A second island on Lake Pichola contains Jag Mandir Palace. Around its shores are the enormous City Palace, the Udaivilas hotel and many other beautiful havelis and ghats (lakeside quays). The light in Udaipur is crystal clear and shooting on the lake in one of the local shikara boats is a stunning experience. Dawn or dusk gives the lake a rosy glow and the famous skyline looks magical.

Jaisalmer, the Golden City, is about 250km west of Jodhpur, further into the Great Thar Desert. The area is famous for its desert landscapes and sand dunes. In spite of its arid surroundings Jaisalmer is home to the Amar Sagar lake/oasis and the stunning Amar Sagar palace which was built right on the lake side. The Golden Fort’s enormous ramparts dominate the city. The views out over the city from these walls are quite spectacular.

Jaipur, also known as the Pink City, is home to the famous Jantar Mantar observatory, the Rambagh Palace hotel, the City Palace and the Hawa Mahal (Hall of Winds). The private apartments at the City Palace contain exquisite rooms with extensive views over the city. There are courtyards and gateways large enough for the maharaja’s elephants and beautiful architecture - both old and surprisingly modern, with the new Baradari restaurant. Just outside the city are the equally recognisable Jal Mahal (Water Palace) and the majestic Amer Fort. Jaigarh Fort towers over Amer, with private gardens and truly spectacular vistas out over the Araveli Hills.
